Drama in Athenry
Athenry’s relationship with the stage is a long and deeply personal one. For generations, the town has produced and celebrated performers, producers, and community organisers whose work has brought joy to local audiences.
In the mid-to-late 20th century, a remarkable group of individuals defined the golden age of amateur drama in the town.
Among them was Tommy Reilly, a gifted producer whose life ended tragically at the Arch. His contemporaries included Mike Fahy, Jack Cunniffe, Mike Kilkelly, Detta Fahy, Noel O’Grady, Christy Howley, Fr. Langan, Kitty Lardner, Joan Murphy, Winnie Kennedy, Michael Hession, Chris Kearns Joe Mahon, Josie Curran and Rosemary Kennedy.
Looking further back, Athenry remembers Tom McHugh, a charismatic character actor who remains a legend of Athenry drama.
That tradition continued into the early 1980s, when Eileen Donohue and Ruth Dobbin staged two Christmas productions in 1981 and 1982. These shows matched the high standards of earlier decades, bringing together the youth of Athenry in spirited performances.
The people of Athenry can look back on these decades of creativity with pride and as locals often say “stage talent runs in the blood”.
