Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 86 19th December 1975 – The Works Showband played the Town Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 19th December 1975, page 21). 9th January 1976 – Ollie Maloney Showband played the Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 9th January 1976, page 19). 20th February 1976 – Rodney’s Glory played the Hall, Dancing 9pm – 1am (source: Connacht Tribune 20th February 1976, page 23). 12th March 1976 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall in March 1976 but, in other Athenry news of the time, the Connacht Tribune 12th March 1976, reported as follows on page 3, under the heading Good Progress Reported On Athenry School Plan: “A total of £17,500 has been subscribed and raised for the Presentation College, Athenry, new school building fund during the past year — this was stated by Mr. Gerry Kelly, Turloughmore in his report to the annual meeting of the Association where he also informed the 200 parents present that the Parish Priest of Athenry, Very Rev. Canon Gibbons had provided a site for the new school and pointed out that this gesture by Canon Gibbons has spared the Presentation Sisters and the Parents £30,000 - the approximate price of a comparable site...” 2nd April 1976 – Athenry Badminton Club Annual Dance with music by local band The Doves (source: Ticket No 087 for attendance at same). 23rd April 1976 – The Works Showband played the Town Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 23rd April 1976, page 21). 29th May 1976 – Tuam Herald 29th May 1976 reported on the Athenry Drama AGM on page 7 but didn’t give an exact day or date for the meeting: 159 “At the annual general meeting of the Athenry Drama Group last week, arrangements were made for the sale of work on Friday 28th in Payne’s Hall. Suggestions were offered as to the type of production which would be staged by the group during the Athenry Come Home festival being organised by the Junior Chamber in August...” NB: That same edition of Tuam Herald also carried a report & photo on page 5 about Kitty Lardner “well known amateur actress and producer” winning a £250 Holiday Voucher in the Match the Money competition sponsored by VG Foodmarkets and Sunbound Holidays. 11th, 13th, 17th, 18th & 20th June 1976 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall at this time but page 8 of the Tuam Herald 12th June 1976 carried a large advertisement for the Athenry Rose Festival being held on these dates, featuring Live Music from Glen Curtin Band, Sandy Duskey, Gary Street and The Fairways, Billy Jo and Harvest, Cotton Mill Boys, and The Haymakers. 160 The Athenry Rose winner received a cheque from Vintners of Athenry; a trophy presented by Clada Mineral Waters; and also progressed on to the Galway Rose Queen Final on August 7th (see August entry below for more on this). 30th July 1976 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall at this time but in terms of local news, page 3 of the Connacht Tribune 30th July 1976 carried a large advertisement for a Closing Down Sale with Super Footwear Bargains (All Stocks Must Go) at Stanley's Athenry (OPEN UNTIL 9 P.M. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY). 13th August 1976 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall at this time but in terms of local news, page 4 of the Connacht Tribune of this date reported as follows: “Twenty one year old Eithne Kennedy, second daughter of Mr Donal Kennedy, NT and Mrs Kennedy, Cross Street, Athenry won the Galway Rose Queen Competition.
