Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 84 2nd August 1974 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall in August 1974 but page 4 of the Connacht Tribune of this date, carries an interesting piece of Athenry trivia under the heading Saloon Car Win: “Mattie McNamara, Athenry, was placed first, with a time of 10 mins 53.6 seconds, in the saloon car race (10 laps) at Mondello Park on Sunday. Mattie was the winner in the same class about two weeks ago.” 13th September 1974 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall in September 1974 but page 4 of the Connacht Tribune of this date, carries a report about Athenry Agricultural Show. Mary Joe O’Dea of Esker won first prize for her Sponge Cake in the Produce Category. 18th October 1974 – The Works Showband played the Town Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 18th October 1974, page 27). 16th November 1974 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall in November 1974 but page 7 of the Tuam Herald of this date, carries the following under the heading Drama: “At the annual general meeting of Athenry Drama Group last week, the following officers were elected: Chairman, Seamus Fahy; hon. sec, Miss Kitty Lardner; asst. sec, Miss Nora Byrne; joint hon. treasurers, Mrs. Winnie Kennedy and Miss Chrissie Kearns. Committee: Mrs. Ena O'Grady, Miss Joan Murphy, Miss Mary Brady, Miss Kitty Fahy, Mrs. Rose Northfield and Jim Feeney. It is hoped to start rehearsals in the very near future for a three-act play, to be staged before Christmas. Keen interest is being shown in the group and a number of young people have joined. There is room for anyone showing interest in drama from any angle and visits to rehearsals will be welcomed.” 27th December 1974 – Unfortunately we have no info available on activities in the Hall in December 1974 but page 5 of the Connacht Tribune of this date, carries the following under the heading Drama: “Miss Noreen Hession, The Square, was a member of Tuam Drama Group, whilst residing in Tuam. She was a member of the cast of the one-act play which was placed joint second at the AllIreland Drama Festival in Naas recently. Now back in Athenry she is taking a keen interest in the local drama group and has a key role in their production now being rehearsed.” 156 26th and 27th January 1975 – Athenry Drama performed Drama At Inish a Three Act play by Lennox Robinson in the Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 1st February 1975, page 7). They hope to stage it in Athenry at the end of January.” 7th February 1975 – A Dance in the Hall with Music from The Doves Showband (source: Connacht Tribune 7th February 1975, page V of the supplement). 157 That same edition of the Tribune also carries the following on page VIII of the supplement, under the heading Athenry Players Success: “Athenry Drama Group presented their Winter production of Drama at Inish in the Town Hall, at the weekend. Despite the weather, fans turned out in big numbers and the general opinion was that they wouldn't have missed it for anything...The whole production was a well-balanced light entertainment. The producer Miss Kitty Lardner, a household word in Drama Circles, was admirably assisted by Seamus Fahy, whose job was back-stage, but nevertheless was of vital importance.
