Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 78 27th August 1972 – The Devil’s Brigade, a 1968 WWII movie starring William Holden, Cliff Robertson, Vince Edwards and Dana Andrews was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). The film was based on the 1966 book of the same name co-written by Robert H. Adleman and Col. George Walton (a member of the brigade). 3rd September 1972 – Hot Millions, a 1968 Comedy Crime Caper starring Peter Ustinov, Maggie Smith, Karl Malden, Bob Newhart, Robert Morley, Cesar Romero and Lynda Baron was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). NB: In one sequence in the movie, Maggie Smith's character is seen taking Bob Newhart's character shopping, and this includes a trip to the Apple Boutique. The Apple Boutique was a retail store on the corner of Baker Street and Paddington Street in the Marylebone district of London. It was owned and managed by the Beatles’ Apple Corps. It only operated as a retail outlet for a little over 7 months (7th December 1967 and closed on 31st July 1968) before it closed down, so this film contains one of the very few examples of that iconic store in operation. 10th September 1972 – Young Billy Young, a 1969 Western starring Robert Mitchum, Angie Dickinson, Robert Walker Jr, David Carradine, Jack Kelly, Deana Martin and Paul Fix was screened in the Hall (source: a surviving Hall poster promoting the film plus a General Film Distributors Ltd letter dated 31st August 1972). Tagline: “Billy better learn fast... or die young!” 17th September 1972 – Imitation of Life, a 1959 Drama starring Lana Turner, John Gavin, Sandra Dee, Dan O'Herlihy, Susan Kohner, Robert Alda and Juanita Moore was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). 24th September 1972 – A Challenge For Robin Hood a 1967 movie starring Barrie Ingham, James Hayter, Leon Greene, Peter Blythe, Gay Hamilton and Alfie Bass was screened in the Hall (source: General Film Distributors Ltd letter dated 31st August 1972). 1st October 1972 – Chuka, a 1967 Western starring Rod Taylor, Ernest Borgnine, John Mills, Luciana Paluzzi, James Whitmore, Victoria Vetri and Herlinda Del Carmen was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). 142 8th October 1972 – The Undefeated, a 1969 American Civil War era Western starring John Wayne, Rock Hudson and Lee Meriwether was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). Lee Meriwether starred in many films and television shows and is well remembered for her portrayal of Catwoman in Batman (1966), and Dr. Ann MacGregor in the TV Sci-Fi series The Time Tunnel. She was crowned Miss America in the 1955 pageant. 15th October 1972 – Where Eagles Dare, a 1968 WWII movie starring Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Mary Ure and Ingrid Pitt, was screened in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal). The film’s title comes from Line 71, as spoken by the title character in Act I, Scene III of Richard III by William Shakespeare: "...the world is grown so bad, that Wrens make prey where Eagles dare not perch." 19th, 20th & 22nd October 1972 – The Athenry Players performed John B Keane’s 1971 comedy Moll in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal, see also the Connacht Tribune 20th October 1972, page 15). 29th October 1972 – The Sons of Katie Elder, a 1965 Western, filmed in Panavision, directed by Henry Hathaway, starring John Wayne, Dean Martin and Martha Hyer was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). 142 The screenplay was adapted from the 1961 novel of the same name, both of which were written by Richard Jessup
