Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 77 2nd July 1972 – The Biggest Bundle of Them All, a 1968 Comedy Crime Caper set in Naples starring Robert Wagner, Raquel Welch, Godfrey Cambridge and Edward G Robinson was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). Eric Burdon & The Animals performed the title track and also featured on the Soundtrack Album of the movie. 9th July 1972 – 1968 movie, Twist of Sand, starring Honor Blackman, was screened in the Hall on this date (source: Hall Journal, plus handwritten note on General Film Distributors Ltd letter dated 4th May 1972). 16th July 1972 – Return of the Seven, a 1966 movie sequel to The Magnificent Seven starring Yul Brynner was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal). 23rd July 1972 – Where Were You When The Lights Went Out? a 1968 Comedy starring Doris Day, Terry Thomas, Patrick O’Neal, Lola Albright, Robert Morse and Morgan Freeman was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). 30th July 1972 – El Dorado, a 1966 Western starring John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, James Caan, Charlene Holt, Michele Carey and Ed Asner was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). 6th August 1972 – Goodbye, Mr. Chips, a 1969 British Musical starring Peter O'Toole, Petula Clark, Michael Redgrave, Siân Phillips and Michael Bryant was screened in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal). 141 13th August 1972 – The Impossible Years, a 1968 Comedy starring David Niven, Lola Albright, Chad Everett, Gale Dixon and Darlene Carr was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal notes). 14th August 1972 – The first of several visits by Finbarr Nolan to the Hall around this time (source: Connacht Tribune 4th August 1972, page 14): “Finbarr Nolan wishes to advise that he will attend at Town Hall, Athenry on every Monday and Thursday for a limited period commencing on Monday 14th August, Hours: 3pm – 8pm.” The Connacht Tribune 11th August, 1972, page 18, carries the following piece about Finbarr: “Internationally known faith healer, twenty year old Finbarr Nolan from Gowna, Co. Cavan comes to the Town Hall, Athenry on August 14 to perform his cures. He should be a busy man, he has appeared on R.T.E. and cures to his credit are numerous. His brother Brendan was in Galway this week-end and spoke of Finbarr’s great record. He had with him letters from scores of people throughout the country, who claimed to be cured of dreadful ailments. He has, it is claimed, brought about relief and cure for such things as migraine, mental depression, asthma, bronchitis, blood pressure, schlerosis, ulcer, epilepsy, diabetes and even cancer. Finbarr uses no more than his hands. The human dynamo, as this system is known, merely means that Finbarr puts his hands on the part of the body that is afflicted.” 20th August 1972 – The Comancheros, a 1961 Western starring John Wayne, Ina Balin and Stuart Whitman, was screened in the Hall (source: Statement from Ron Harris Ltd, dated 28th July 1972, confirming that The Comancheros has been transferred from 15th to 20th August, as requested): “Dear Mr Murphy, as requested in your letter, I have transferred The Comancheros from Aug. 15th to Aug. 20th... Vincent O’Reilly.” 141 The Hall Journal records that the 1939 version of Goodbye Mr Chips had been screened in the Hall on 23rd April 1946 (NB: it is not listed above)
