Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 74 13th March 1971 – The Rhythm Stars Showband performed for a Dance in the Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 12th March 1971, page 13). 20th March 1971 – The Crystal All Stars Showband performed in the Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 19th March 1971, page 15). 24th March 1971 – Athenry Macra na Feirme held a dance in the Hall with music by The Red River Valley Boys (source: Connacht Tribune 19th March 1971, page 15). 25th June 1971 – The Boutique, Athenry, presented the first ever Fashion Show in the Hall. The Connacht Tribune 18th June 1971 carried the following on page 4, under the heading Fashions on Parade: “The first-ever Fashion Show will be held in the Town Hall, Athenry, on Friday, June 25th. The show is being sponsored by Mrs. Nano Kenny, the proprietress of the recently opened Boutique. Local models have been engaged and a cabaret session will also be laid on. The compere will be local girl Miss Freda McGough of radio and television fame. The proceeds will be donated to a local charity.” 3rd July 1971 – Saturday Night Dance in the Hall with music from The Keynotes Showband, featuring Ben-E-Quin (source: Connacht Tribune 2nd July 1971, page 14). 11th July 1971 – Connacht Tribune 9th July 1971, page 7, carried the following note under the heading Paris Choir: “The world famous Boys Choir – The Little Singers – of Nogent-Sur-Marna, Paris, who have just toured Europe and North America will visit The Town Hall, Athenry on Sunday. This choir consisting of boys of eight to fifteen years will cater for music lovers of every category, both young and old.” 22nd July 1971 – Athenry Soccer Club Dance in the Hall with music from The Wild Breed (source: Connacht Tribune 23rd July 1971, page 15). 31st July 1971 – Saturday Night Dance in the Hall with music from The Hawaiian Showband (source: Connacht Tribune 30th July 1971, page 17). 13th August 1971 – Unfortunately we could find no information for activities in the Hall at this time, however the Connacht Tribune of this date, reported the following Athenry news on the front page, under the heading Objects Found: “While excavating an area for a private swimming pool outside his home at Dunsandle Demesne, Athenry, Mr. John McCutin, unearthed a woman's wedding ring, a lady's wristlet watch, two hand-grenades, 45 revolver and 21 rifle bullets at a depth of 4 1/ 2 feet. The grenades are of a very old type and ante date the World War II period when Dunsandle House nearby was occupied by detachments of-the Irish Army as an outpost. Superintendent P. Flaherty, Loughrea, was notified of the cache and examined the ammunition.” 16th September 1971 – Saturday Night Dance in the Hall with music from The Jaguars Showband, featuring Dene Lane (source: Connacht Tribune 3rd September 1971, page 17). 4th October 1971 – Saturday Night Dance in the Hall with music from The Swingtime Aces Showband (source: Connacht Tribune 15th October 1971, page 15). 26th November 1971 – The Boutique, Athenry, presented another Fashion Show in the Hall, titled With Christmas In Mind, Fashions For The Festive Season, with Cabaret during the interval (source: Connacht Tribune 12th November 1971, page 12). The Connacht Tribune 3rd December 1971, page 6, carried the following under the heading Model: “Mrs. Bridie Conroy, N.T., Craughwell, was one of the principal models in the fashion show at the Town Hall, Athenry last week. The outfits modelled by her were sold before the show was over.” 28th to 30th November 1971 – Athenry Drama Group performed Night Must Fall in the Hall, a play in Three Acts by Emlyn Williams (source: Connacht Tribune 5th March 1971, page 14). NB: Anew McMaster’s Dramatic Company had performed this play in the Hall in February 1940, Carl Clopet’s Company had performed it in the Hall in May 1944, while Ibbs & Pringle had performed it in the Hall in October 1949.
