NB: The Swallows had been formed by former members of The Premier Aces Showband. 9th May 1970 – Dance held in the Hall with Music from The Crystal All Stars Showband (source: Hall Journal). 5th June 1970 – Presentation College End of Term Dance, (source: Dance Ticket No 053). 11th July 1970 – Chris Grace & The Raindrops performed in the Hall (source: letter from their Manager, Jimmy Higgins, to Margie Murphy of the Town Hall, dated 20th June 1970): “I’d like to confirm the following date on behalf of Chris Grace & the Raindrops, Saturday 11th July 1970...” 1st August 1970 – Unfortunately no info is available for activities in the Hall at this time, however Tuam Herald of this date reported the following Athenry news on page 7, under the heading Deputation: “A deputation from Athenry Fianna Fail Cumann met the Minister for Local Government, Mr. Robert Molloy, T.D., in Galway last week. They were Mrs. C. Taylor, Mr. M. Cronnolly, Mr. C. Barrett and Mr. J. Kennedy. The purpose of their visit was to get definite information regarding the housing position in Athenry and also the provision of a public toilet. They were very impressed by the Minister's reception and will await the outcome of the talks...” 26th September 1970 – Tuam Herald of this date, page 7, carried a note on the Annual General Meeting of the Athenry Badminton Club in the Hall. 3rd October 1970 – Dance with Music from The Tides Showband (source Connacht Tribune 2nd October 1970, page 15). 30th October 1970 – Presentation College Students’ Hallowe’en Dance, (source: Dance Ticket No 121). 27th November 1970 – Unfortunately we could find no information for activities in the Hall at this time, however the Evening Herald of this date, reported as follows on the front page: “THE BISHOP who helped save Pope Paul from his attacker... Bishop Anthony Denis Galvin... is a former vice-rector of St. Joseph's College, Freshford, Co. Kilkenny. His father, Mr. Jeremiah Galvin was from Slieverpugh, near Athenry, Co. Galway... Bishop Galvin, who grappled with the man who tried to stab Pope Paul, said today he saw the Pontiff step back with his hands round his middle - and then walk back as if nothing had happened...” 12th December 1970 – Unfortunately we could find no information for activities in the Hall at this time, however the Tuam Herald of this date, reported the following Athenry news on page 7, under the heading Show Meeting: “At a meeting of Athenry Agricultural Show Society, it was decided to hold the 1971 Show on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11th and 12th. The secretary was instructed to register these dates with the R.D.S. and the Show Jumping Association of Ireland. It was also decided to hold the annual general meeting early in January, if the Bank was in a position to have the account ready for audit.” 28th January 1971 – The Hall hosted a DH Sherrard & Co Ltd Potato Symposium (source: Connacht Tribune 23rd January 1971, page 7): “A SERIES of potato symposia covering all aspects of mechanisation, including handling and storage, are being held at three centres next week, by D. H. Sherrard and Co Ltd. The current trend to larger acreages and the scarcity and high cost of labour, makes a systematic approach to mechanisation of potato growing of vital interest to every grower.” 13th February 1971 – The Irish Farmers Journal of this date carried a photo, on page 26, of 4 attendees at the Potato Symposium that had been held in the Hall. 140 7th to 10th March 1971 – Athenry Players performed The Importance of Being Earnest in the Hall, a comedy by Oscar Wilde, with a Matinee performance on 7th March @ 3:30pm (source: Connacht Tribune 5th March 1971, page 14). 140 Yes, this is technically an entry for January 1969 but we didn’t have any other Hall info for Feb 1969.
