Athenry Town Hall 1907 - 1976

Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 69 4th November 1966 – St Mary’s Hurling Club Athenry held a Victory Ceili in the Hall with Music from Kieran Kelly’s Ceili Band (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th October 1966, page 15). NB: Athenry had recently won their first County Minor Hurling title, defeating Castlegar in the Final by 6-5 to 3-3. 13th November 1966 – Murder Most Foul, a 1964 Miss Marple movie starring Margaret Rutherford, Charles Tingwell and Stringer Davis was screened in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 11th November 1966, page 15). The film is very loosely based on Agatha Christie’s 1952 novel Mrs McGinty's Dead. The title is a quote from the Ghost in Shakespeare’s Tragedy, Hamlet – Prince of Denmark (Act 1, Scene 5): "Murder most foul as in the best it is/But this most foul, strange and unnatural." 11th December 1966 – Brazen Bell a 1962 Western, starring James Drury, Lee J. Cobb, Doug McClure and George C Scott was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 9th December 1966, page 17). This is 2 episodes of the TV series The Virginian edited together to bring it up to feature film length. 15th January 1967 – The Ipcress File, a 1965 spy movie starring Michael Caine, was screened in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal). 23rd & 24th February 1967 – The Athenry Players performed The Shadow of a Gunman, a 1923 play in Two Acts by Seán O’Casey, on these 2 nights, (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 17th February 1967, page 13). 17th March 1967 – Johnny Cool, a 1963 Neo Noir starring Henry Silva, Elizabeth Montgomery, Mort Sahl, Telly Savalas, Jim Backus, Joey Bishop, and Sammy Davis Jr (source: Hall Journal, GFD Ltd 2nd March 1967 letter, see also Connacht Tribune 17th March 1967, page 15). Sammy Davis Jr also sang the theme song. 130 9th April 1967 – The Man from Laramie, a 1955 Western starring James Stewart, Arthur Kennedy, Donald Crisp, and Cathy O'Donnell was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 7th April 1967, page 15). 131 28th May 1967 – The Revenge of Frankenstein, a 1958 Horror movie starring Peter Cushing, Lionel Jeffries and Eunice Gayson was screened in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal). 18th June 1967 – Miss Robin Hood, a 1952 Comedy starring Margaret Rutherford, Richard Hearne, Dora Bryan, James Robertson Justice, Peter Jones, Sid James, Reg Varney and Kenneth Connor (source: Hall Journal). The support feature was Anything for Laughs (1951), a narrated, re-edited re-release of The Show, a 1922 American silent short comedy film starring Oliver Hardy. 30th July 1967 – The Big Job, a 1965 comedy movie starring Sid James and Joan Sims, was screened in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal). 15th August 1967 – Blood on the Arrow, a 1964 Western movie starring Dale Robertson, was screened in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal, also a General Films Distributors letter dated 2nd August 1967). 3rd September 1967 – The Face of Fu Manchu, a 1965 movie, starring Christopher Lee as Fu Manchu, was shown in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, also a General Films Distributors letter dated 2nd August 1967). NB: The movie was shot on location in Ireland. Accompanying promotional material from General Film Distributors summarises the film as follows: “Spine thrilling horror thriller as the infamous Fu Manchu conspires to destroy the world by capturing the formula of a secret deadly liquid. Running Time: 1 hour 34 minutes.” 1st October 1967 – Summer Holiday, a 1963 movie starring Cliff Richard was shown in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, also a General Films Distributors letter dated 2nd August 1967). 130 Elizabeth Montgomery is probably best remembered for playing the role of Samantha Stephens on TV comedy show Bewitched 131 This movie was previously screened in the Hall in August 1961
