Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 65 20th & 21st February 1964 – Athenry Players performed Shadow and Substance in the Hall, a play in Four Acts by Paul Vincent Carroll (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 15th February 1964, page 15). 13th March 1964 – 1958 movie, King Creole, starring Elvis Presley, Carolyn Jones and Walter Matthau, was screened in the Hall (sources: Hall Journal, a Ron Harris letter dated 27th February 1964, see also Connacht Tribune 7th March 1964, page 15, and also). 29th March 1964 – Easter Sunday Dance with Music by The Mellochords Showband (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th March 1964, page 15). 30th & 31st March 1964 – Kid Galahad, a 1962 movie starring Elvis Presley, Joan Blackman and Gig Young was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th March 1964, page 15). 120 3rd April 1964 – What a Whopper, a 1961 Comedy (involving the Loch Ness Monster) starring Adam Faith, Carole Lesley and Wilfrid Brambell, 121 along with some familiar faces from the Carry On movies: Sid James, Charles Hawtrey and Terry Scott, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th March 1964, page 15). 24th April 1964 – The Vikings, a 1958 movie starring Kirk Douglas, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 18th April 1964, page 15). Accompanying promotional material from General Film Distributors summarises the film as follows: “Out of the pages of history, come the marauding Vikings in this spectacular period adventure story. Teeming with action and in beautiful colour, this is a powerful action saga of the high seas. Running Time: 1 hour 52 minutes.” 15th May 1964 – The Dublin Repertory Theatre performed John B Keane’s The Year of the Hiker, a Three Act play, in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 9th May 1964, page 15). 31st May 1964 – The Naked Edge, a 1961 Thriller starring Gary Cooper and Deborah Kerr, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 30th May 1964, page 15). 7th June 1964 – One Eyed Jacks, a 1961 Western starring Marlon Brando and Karl Malden, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th June 1964, page 15). NB: Brando also directed this film. 19th June 1964 – The Pleasure of His Company, a 1961 comedy starring Fred Astaire and Debbie Reynolds, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 13th June 1964, page 15). 3rd July 1964 – Crooks Anonymous, a 1962 comedy starring Leslie Phillips, Stanley Baxter, Julie Christie 122 and Wilfrid Hyde White, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 27th June 1964, page 15). 7th July 1964 – Dance in the Hall with Music from The Swingtime Aces (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 4th July 1964, page 15). 31st July & 2nd August 1964 – Witness For The Prosecution, a 1957 Courtroom Drama, adapted from Agatha Christie’s play of the same name, starring Tyrone Power, Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich, Elsa Lanchester and Una O’Connor was screened in the Hall at 9pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 25th July 1964, page 14 & 1st August 1964, page 15).
