Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 64 14th April 1963 – The Tornadoes Showband from Dundalk provided the music for a Dance in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 13th April 1963, advertisement on page 15). 117 16th April 1963 – A Dance in the Hall with The Swingtime Aces providing the music (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 13th April 1963, advert on page 15). 3rd May 1963 – Carry On Regardless, a 1961 comedy movie starring Sid James, Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey (see pic opposite), Liz Frazer etc., was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 27th April 1963, page 15). This was the fifth film in the Carry On series. 5th June 1963 – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), a popular Musical Comedy based on the 1949 Stage Musical of the same name was screened in the Hall for its 10th anniversary. The film stars Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. It had been first released in the summer of 1953 (source: Hall Journal, see also the Connacht Tribune 1st June 1963, page 15). 118 19th June 1963 – Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 Thriller, starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 15th June 1963, page 15). 7th July 1963 – This Other Eden, a 1959 Irish comedy film directed by Muriel Box and starring Audrey Dalton, Leslie Phillips, Milo O’Shea, Niall MacGinnis and Hilton Edwards was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th July 1963, page 15). 20th August 1963 – Ocean’s 11, a 1960 heist movie starring Frank Sinatra, Angie Dickinson, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 17th August 1963, page 15). 1st September 1963 – GI Blues, a 1960 movie starring Elvis Presley was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 31st August 1963, page 15). 8th October 1963 – The Titfield Thunderbolt, a 1953 movie starring Stanley Holloway, Hugh Griffith and John Gregson was screened in the Hall, along with a 1961 Edgar Wallace Mystery, Man at the Carlton Tower (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 5th October 1963, page 15). 29th November 1963 – They Died With Their Boots On, a 1941 Western starring Errol Flynn as General George Armstrong Custer and Olivia de Havilland as Libbie Bacon Custer, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 23rd November 1963, page 15). 119 1st December 1963 – On The Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando, Lee J Cobb and Karl Malden (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 30th November 1963, page 15). 26th December 1963 – A St Stephen’s Night Dance with music by The Clipper Aces Showband (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 21st December 1963, page 14). 21st January 1964 – The Athenry Branch of the National Farmers’ Association held their Annual Dance in the Hall with music by The Premier Aces Showband (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 18th January 1964, page 15). 117 Further afield, The Beatles met The Rolling Stones for the very first time at the Crawdaddy Club in London, where The Stones were the House Band. 118 First screened in the Hall in May 1955, see above 119 In World News: President John F Kennedy had been assassinated just days earlier.
