Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 56 4th October 1957 – The Black Shield of Falworth, a 1954 movie starring Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th September 1957, page 15). 19th November 1957 – The Seven Little Foys, a 1955 comedy starring Bob Hope and Jimmy Cagney, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 16th November 1957, page 13). 24th November 1957 – Bonnie Scotland, a 1935 Comedy starring Laurel & Hardy, June Lang and James Finlayson was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 23rd November 1957, page 13). 11th & 12th December 1957 – Athenry Drama performed They Got What They Wanted, a Three Act Comedy by Louis D’alton, (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 7th December 1957, page 14). 25th December 1957 – One Good Turn, a 1955 comedy starring Norman Wisdom and Thora Hird was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 21st December 1957, page 13). 6th January 1958 – Holiday Dance with Music by the Sextus Showband (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 4th January 1958, page 9). NB: Sextus had also played the Hall on 1st January 1958. 9th January 1958 – Athenry Drama again performed They Got What They Wanted, a Three Act Comedy by Louis D’alton, this time in aid of St Marys Hurling Club (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 4th January 1958, page 9). 17th January 1958 – Abbott and Costello Meet The Mummy, a 1955 comedy starring Bud Abbott & Lou Costello along with Marie Windsor and Eddie Parker was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 11th January 1958, page 13). Total takings £18 & 8 shillings. 7th February 1958 – White Christmas, a 1954 movie starring Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye, was screened in the Hall. Music by Irving Berlin (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 1st February 1958, page 15). 8th & 9th February 1958 – Magnificent Obsession, a 1954 film starring Jane Wyman & Rock Hudson was screened in the Hall on both nights @ 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 8th February 1958, page 15). 103 6th & 7th March 1958 – Athenry Drama performed Margaret Gillan in the Hall, a play in Three Acts by Brinsley McNamara, in aid of St Marys Hurling Club (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 1st March 1958, page 14). NB: Athenry Drama later secured first place in the Mayo Drama Festival for their performance of this play at Ballinrobe on 18th March 1958. The Tuam Herald, 22nd March 1958, page 1, reported as follows: “ATHENRY Players won the premier award in the Mayo Drama Festival which concluded in Ballinrobe on Tuesday night. They were awarded 89 marks in the open three-act competition for their production, of Brinsley McNamara's tragedy, Margaret Gillan. This is their second major success with the play, for which they also received the principal award at Scarriff (Co. Clare) Festival, as well as a nomination to, the AllIreland Festival at Athlone next month... Mr Michael J Molloy, the Milltown playwright, who made his debut as an adjudicator, said that the Athenry production was the outstanding example in the Festival, of perfect casting. All the characters in this very difficult play were splendidly portrayed...” 27th March 1958 – Francis Covers The Big Town, a 1953 Comedy starring Donald O'Connor, Yvette Dugay, and Gene Lockhart was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, a copy of a handwritten note to Sight & Sound dated 21st February 1958, see also Connacht Tribune 22nd March 1958, page 13).
