Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 53 13th May 1955 – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a 1953 Musical Comedy, based on the 1949 Stage Musical of the same name, starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, was screened in the Hall for the first time (source: the Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 7th May 1955, page 15). It features Marilyn’s iconic performance of the song Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend 98 which was originally performed on stage by Carol Channing in the 1949 Broadway production. 28th June 1955 – Stalag 17, a 1953 WWII movie based in a POW camp, starring William Holden, Otto Preminger and Peter Graves, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 25th June 1955, page 13). 29th July 1955 – Genevieve, a 1953 British Comedy starring John Gregson, Dinah Sheridan, Kenneth More, Kay Kendall and Edward Malin was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 23rd July 1955, page 13). The plot revolves around the Annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. The Genevieve of the movie’s title is actually a vintage car taking part in the Rally. It is a 1904 Darracq, licence number HXR 322 driven by Alan McKim (played by Gregson), and Wendy, his long suffering wife (played by Sheridan). 12th August 1955 – The Girl Who Had Everything, a 1953 Drama starring William Powell, Elizabeth Taylor and Gig Young was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th August 1955, page 13). Jeopardy (1953) starring Barbara Stanwyck, Barry Sullivan and Ralph Meeker was also shown. 6th September 1955 – City That Never Sleeps, a 1953 Film Noir starring Gig Young, Mala Powers and Paula Raymond was screened in the Hall (source: Connacht Tribune 3rd September 1955, page 13). 7th October 1955 – The African Queen, a 1951 movie starring Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn and Robert Morley was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 1st October 1955, page 13). Bogart won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance. The film was adapted from the 1935 CS Forester novel of the same name and directed by (one time St Clerans resident) John Huston. 14th October 1955 – Roman Holiday, a 1953 romantic comedy starring Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn and Eddie Albert was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 8th October 1955, page 13). 23rd November 1955 – Ivanhoe, a 1952 Adventure Epic starring Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine and George Sanders was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 19th November 1955, page 13). 1st & 2nd December 1955 – Athenry Players performed Arsenic & Old Lace in the Hall, a 1939 Comedy play in Three Acts by Joseph Kesselring (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 26th November 1955, page 13). 15th December 1955 – Athenry Players again performed Arsenic & Old Lace in the Hall. 25th to 30th December 1955 – Connacht Tribune 24th December 1955, 98 Music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Leo Robin
