Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 52 20th August 1954 – Calamity Jane and Sam Bass, a 1949 Western starring Yvonne de Carlo (as Calamity), Howard Duff and Dorothy Hart was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 14th August 1954, page 11). 95 Yvonne de Carlo starred in many Hollywood movies but is probably best remembered for playing Lily Munster, the matriarch in 1960s CBS TV Comedy The Munsters. Herman Munster, played by Fred Gwynne, was her husband in that show. 28th September 1954 – The Mississippi Gambler, a 1953 Western starring Tyrone Power, Piper Laurie and Julia Adams was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 25th September 1954, page 11). 19th October 1954 – Hoodlum Empire, a 1952 American Film Noir crime film directed by Joseph Kane starring Brian Donlevy, Claire Trevor, Forrest Tucker, Vera Ralston, Luther Adler and John Russell was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 16th October 1954, page 13). “Extra – Sensational 3 Dimension METROSCOPIX, Special glasses to view this film obtainable at Cinema.” 96 9th November 1954 – Abbott and Costello Go to Mars, a 1953 Comedy starring Bud Abbott, Lou Costello and Mari Blanchard was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th November 1954, page 11). NB: Nobody actually goes to Mars in the film but Abbott & Costello do end up on the planet Venus instead, inhabited only by beautiful women including Queen Allura, played by Mari Blanchard. 28th November 1954 – My Cousin Rachel, a 1952 romantic mystery film, based on Daphne du Maurier’s 1951 Gothic novel of the same name, starring Olivia de Havilland, Richard Burton, Audrey Dalton and Tudor Owen was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 27th November 1954, page 11). NB: Audrey Dalton was an Irish actress, daughter of Emmet Dalton, a Major General in the Irish Free State Army. 15th & 16th December 1954 – The Athenry Choral Society performed The Lily of Killarney in the Hall (source: the Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 11th December 1954, page 15): “Athenry Choral Society presents The Lily of Killarney a synopsis of The Lily of Killarney and Play The Colleen Bawn, combined and adapted by Percy Singleton, supported by A Grand Variety Concert...” 25th December 1954 – A Day at the Races, a 1937 Comedy starring the Marx Brothers with Allan Jones, Maureen O'Sullivan and Margaret Dumont was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal). Groucho Marx plays the part of Dr Hugo Z. Hackenbush. 97 30th January 1955 – Something in the City, a 1950 Comedy starring Richard Hearne, Garry Marsh and Ellen Pollock was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 29th January 1955, page 13). The support feature was Korea Patrol a 1951 war film starring Richard Emory and Benson Fong. It was released by Eagle-Lion Films and was directed by Max Nosseck. 1st February 1955 – Son of Paleface, a 1952 Comedy Western starring Bob Hope, Jane Russell and Roy Rogers was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 29th January 1955, page 13). It was a sequel to The Paleface (1948) which was screened in the Hall in August 1953. 13th February 1955 – Athenry Show Dance held in the Hall with Music by Jimmy Smyth’s Arcadian Orchestra, Navan (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 12th February 1955, page 13). 3rd & 4th March 1955 – Athenry Players performed Ill Met By Moonlight in the Hall, a 1946 Three Act play by Michéal Mac Liammóir.
