Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 46 27th April 1950 – Tuam Little Theatre Guild performed The Blind Wolf by TC Murray in the Hall, (source: Hall Journal, see also Tuam Herald 22nd April 1950, page 5: “Tuam Little Theatre Guild are to give another performance of T. C. Murray's The Blind Wolf, and for' the first time will take a production to another town. By invitation of the Athenry Players, they will stage the play at the Town Hall, Athenry, on Thursday night, 27th inst. This is hoped to be the beginning of a reciprocal arrangement between the two groups, under which each in turn will produce their plays at Tuam and Athenry. If other engagements permit, it is hoped to have the Athenry group visit Tuam with their production of Frank Carney's The Righteous Are Bold, for which they have won two premier festival awards this season.” 19th May 1950 – The Dublin Evening Mail, 19th May 1950, Page 6, records that there had been an arson attempt on the Hall on February 5th and also on Hanberry’s Hotel on 13th April 1950: “P****, McDonnell’s Lane, Athenry, was sentenced to six months by District Justice Cahill at Athenry on charges of malicious damage by setting fire to Hansberry’s Hotel, Athenry, on April 13, and Murphy’s dance hall, Athenry on February 5. Charges of arson in respect of the same two burnings were withdrawn...” 4th June 1950 – Road To Utopia, a 1946 Comedy and starring Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Dorothy Lamour was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 3rd June 1950, page 9). Road to Utopia was the 4th film in the 7 movie "Road To..." series. 84 2nd July 1950 – The Ghost and Mrs Muir, a 1947 movie, starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 1st July 1950, page 9). 9th August 1950 – Sundown, a 1941 WWII film starring Gene Tierney, Bruce Cabot and George Sanders was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal). 10th September 1950 – Where There's Life, a 1947 Comedy starring Bob Hope, Signe Hasso, William Bendix, and George Coulouris was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 9th September 1950, page 9). The film's title derives from the saying “Where there's life, there's hope.” It is word play on the name of the star of the movie, Bob Hope. 1st October 1950 – The Two Mrs Carrolls, a 1947 movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyck, was shown in the Hall (source: the Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 30th September 1950, page 11). 29th October 1950 – Road House, a 1948 Film Noir starring Ida Lupino, Cornel Wilde, Celeste Holm and Richard Widmark was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th October 1950, page 9). 8th November 1950 – Cheyenne, a 1947 Western starring Dennis Morgan and Jane Wyman, was shown in the Hall (source: the Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 4th November 1950, page 9). 12th November 1950 – The Luck of the Irish, a 1948 comedy starring Tyrone Power and Anne Baxter, was shown in the Hall (source: the Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 11th November 1950, page 9). 28th & 29th December 1950 – HMS Pinafore, a stage musical by Gilbert & Sullivan, was performed in the Hall by the Athenry Choral Society (sources: the Hall Journal, a show programme and see also the Connacht Tribune 2nd December 1950, page 13 and the Connacht Tribune 23rd December 1950, page 19 ). 85 28th January 1951 – Whisky Galore!, a 1949 British comedy starring Basil Radford and Gordon Jackson, was shown in the Hall (source: the Hall Journal). 15th & 16th February 1951 – Maurice Harte, a Two Act play by TC Murray, (originally entitled The Levite), was performed in the Hall on both of these dates by the Athenry Drama Group.
