Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 41 18th January 1948 – Rage in Heaven, a 1941 Film Noir thriller starring Robert Montgomery, Ingrid Bergman, and George Sanders was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, also a notebook with news cutting as displayed here, taken from the Connacht Tribune 17th January 1948, page 9). 25th January 1948 – Destry Rides Again, a 1939 comedy Western starring Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 24th January 1948, page 9). Special Extra Feature: The Royal Wedding, the November 1947 wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten. 75 13th February 1948 – David Copperfield, a 1935 MGM film starring WC Fields, Freddie Bartholomew, Lionel Barrymore and Maureen O’Sullivan was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 7th February 1948, page 9). It was adapted from Charles Dickens’ 1850 novel. 2nd March 1948 – A Night At The Opera, a 1935 Marx Brothers comedy was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th February 1948, page 9). 5th March 1948 – Love Crazy, a 1941 ‘screwball’ comedy starring popular Hollywood couple William Powell and Myrna Loy, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 28th February 1948, page 9). 30th March 1948 – Abbott and Costello in Hollywood, a 1945 comedy starring Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 20th March 1948, page 9). 20th April 1948 – Tarzan Escapes, a 1936 Tarzan movie, starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 17th April 1948, page 9). 23rd & 25th April 1948 – Anchors Aweigh, a 1945 musical comedy film starring Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, and Gene Kelly, was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 17th April 1948, page 9). The film combined live-action with hand drawn animation. One sequence features Jerry, the cartoon mouse from Tom and Jerry dancing with Gene Kelly. 3rd to 9th May 1948 – Anew McMaster’s Travelling Dramatic Company played the Hall for 7 consecutive nights, performing a different play each night (source: Hall Journal and tour promo card from 1948):  Pink String and Sealing Wax  Macbeth  Dr Angelus  Trilby  Oedipus the Tyrant  The Crime of Margaret Foley  Murder in Thornton Square 30th May 1948 – Brooklyn Orchid, a 1942 Comedy movie starring William Bendix, Joe Sawyer, Marjorie Woodworth, Grace Bradley, Richard "Skeets" Gallagher, Florine McKinney and Leonid Kinskey was screened in the Hall (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 29th May 1948, page 9). This was the first of the Taxi Comedies, featuring Bendix, Sawyer, and Bradley in the same roles.
