Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 26 18th to 24th April 1938 – The Moonlight Revellers Travelling Company performed their All Star Variety in the Hall on 7 consecutive nights (source: Hall Journal). 17th May 1938 – J Walkin Travelling Cinema Company screened The Invisible Ray in the Hall, a 1936 horror film starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi (source: Hall Journal). 26th June 1938 – Concert held in the Hall, organised by T Reilly (source: Hall Journal). 20th July 1938 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened San Francisco in the Hall, a 1936 disaster movie, based on the true story of the April 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The film stars Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy (source: Hall Journal). 17th August 1938 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened The Great O’Malley in the Hall, a 1937 gangster movie, starring Pat O'Brien, Sybil Jason, Humphrey Bogart, and Ann Sheridan (source: Hall Journal). 23rd September 1938 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened Dimples in the Hall, a 1936 movie, starring Shirley Temple, Frank Morgan and Helen Westley (source: Hall Journal). 10th October 1938 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened Charlie Chan at the Olympics in the Hall, a 1937 movie, starring Warner Oland as Charlie Chan 49 (source: Hall Journal). NB: Jesse Owens, who won four gold track & field medals at the 1936 Olympic Games, features as himself. 17th to 20th November 1938 – Metropolitan Players (Louis D’alton) performed 4 consecutive nights in the Hall (source: Hall Journal):  The House of Gold, by Louis D’alton  Only Sally Ann  The Last Command, by Louis D’alton  When Night Falls, by M Williams 16th December 1938 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened (The Mighty) Tundra in the Hall, a 1936 drama film directed by Norman Dawn and featuring Merrill McCormick, Frank Baker and Earl Dwire (source: Hall Journal). 26th January 1939 – Daniel Ryan (Kilkee) Travelling Picture Company screened The Early Bird in the Hall, a 1936 comedy film starring Richard Hayward, Jimmy Mageean and Charlotte Tedlie (source: Hall Journal). 2nd February 1939 – Ryan (Kilkee) Travelling Picture Company screened The Woman in Red in the Hall, a 1935 drama film starring Barbara Stanwyck and Gene Raymond, based on the novel North Shore (source: Hall Journal). 12th March 1939 – Leo Caslin Travelling Picture Company (Strokestown) screened The High Command in the Hall, a 1937 British film, adapted from the 1936 novel The General Goes Too Far, starring Lionel Atwill, Lucie Mannheim and James Mason (source: Hall Journal). 20th April 1939 – Ryan (Kilkee) Travelling Picture Company screened Frisco Kid in the Hall, a 1935 film starring James Cagney, Margaret Lindsay, Ricardo Cortez, Lili Damita, and Barton MacLane (source: Hall Journal). 24th to 30th April 1939 – J & C Mack All Star Variety Show played the Hall for 7 consecutive nights (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 22nd April 1939, pages 5 & 12): “ONE HUNDRED PER CENT QUICK-FIRE VARIETY!” 12th May 1939 – Ryan (Kilkee) Travelling Picture Company screened One Hundred Men and a Girl in the Hall, a 1937 musical comedy starring Deanna Durbin and Leopold Stokowski (source: Hall Journal). 25th June 1939 – Leo Caslin Travelling Picture Company (Strokestown) screened Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the Hall, a 1937 animated film, based on the 1812 fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm (source: Hall 49 Warner Oland, the actor that played Charlie Chan, was actually Swedish American, born in 1879 in Nyby, Bjurholm Municipality, Västerbotten County, Sweden. Oland's family emigrated to the USA in 1892, settling in Connecticut.
