Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 25 18th August 1937 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened Public Hero Number 1 in the Hall, a 1935 crime drama starring Lionel Barrymore, Jean Arthur, Chester Morris and Joseph Calleia (source: Hall Journal). 10th September 1937 – Billy Walsh Talkies, a Travelling Picture Company, screened Million Dollar Ransom in the Hall, a 1934 Gangster movie from Universal Pictures, starring Phillips Holmes, Edward Arnold, Mary Carlisle, Wini Shaw, Andy Devine and Robert Gleckler (source: Hall Journal). 8th October 1937 – Billy Walsh Talkies, a Travelling Picture Company, screened White Lies in the Hall, a 1934 Gangster movie, starring Victor Jory, Fay Wray, and Walter Connolly (source: Hall Journal). NB: Fay Wray is probably best remembered for her role as Ann Darrow, in the original 1933 King Kong movie (see 9th May 1940 entry below). 5th November 1937 – The Tuam Herald of 6th November 1937 notes as follows on page 2: “At Athenry Town Hall on Friday night, Boris Karloff in Juggernaut will be thrown on the screen. Four people at the mercy of an insane physician. The famous musical play that was the sensation of two continents, I Give My Heart, will also be shown.” Juggernaut (aka The Demon Doctor) is a 1936 British horror movie film, starring Boris Karloff and Joan Wyndham. I Give My Heart (aka The Loves of Madame Dubarry) is a 1935 British musical film adapted from the stage operetta The DuBarry by Carl Millöcker. The Hall Journal records that the Billy Walsh Talkies, a Travelling Picture Company, screened I Give My Heart in the Hall on 5th November 1937. 26th November 1937 – Billy Walsh Talkies, a Travelling Picture Company, screened The Old Curiosity Shop in the Hall, a 1934 British movie, starring Elaine Benson, Ben Webster and Hay Petrie (source: Hall Journal). NB: This movie is an adaptation of the 1841 novel The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens. 10th December 1937 – Billy Walsh’s Talkies, a Travelling Picture Company, screened Someone at the Door in the Hall, a 1936 British movie, starring Aileen Marson, Billy Milton, Noah Beery, John Irwin and Edward Chapman, based on a West End play by Dorothy & Campbell Christie (source: Hall Journal). 3rd to 5th January 1938 – Metropolitan Players (Louis D’alton) performed 3 nights in the Hall (source: Hall Journal): Brennan on the Moor by Louis D’alton Home on the Range, by Kathleen Kavanagh Dead Man’s Shoes, by Louis D’alton 4th February 1938 – Collins’ Travelling Picture Company screened No Monkey Business in the Hall, a 1935 British comedy, Gene Gerrard, June Clyde and Renée Houston (source: Hall Journal). 21st to 23rd February 1938 – Richard & Lillian Carrickford’s Repertory Players performed 3 different plays in the Hall on 3 consecutive nights (source the Hall Journal), including the following: Peg O’ The Reeks, by Mrs Carrickford The Laughter of Fools, by HF (Henry Francis) Maltby 6th March 1938 – Athenry Gaelic Dramatic Society performed the play Cor in Aghaidh an Chaim by Micheál Breathnach in the Hall (source: Hall Journal). Tuam Herald 19th March 1938, page 2, reports a large attendance at the play: “There was a large attendance at the Irish play in the Town Hall, Athenry, on Sunday night. The play was produced by the Athenry Gaelic Dramatic Society exclusively. Perhaps it would be invidious to single out any one player where all have done so well. However, special mention is due to Miss Lardner, Miss Monaghan and Miss McLoughlin. All three were quite at home on the stage and performed their respective parts in a very pleasing and creditable manner.”
