Athenry Town Hall 1907 - 1976

Murphy’s Town Hall Athenry 22 19th to 21st September 1935 – Paul Terry’s People’s Popular Players performed 3 nights in the Hall with a different play on each night, including the following (source: Hall Journal):  The Madman, by Paul Terry  East Lynne, a drama in Four Acts by Mrs Henry Wood (aka Ellen Wood) 4th October 1935 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened The Thundering Herd in the Hall, a 1933 Western starring Randolph Scott, Judith Allen, Buster Crabbe, and Noah Beery Sr (source: Hall Journal). The movie was based on the novel of the same name by Zane Grey. 8th November 1935 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened The Lemon Drop Kid in the Hall, a 1934 comedy starring Lee Tracy, Helen Mack, and William Frawley (source: Hall Journal). NB: This Damon Runyan story was later remade in 1951 starring Bob Hope and screened in the Hall in June 1953, see below. William Frawley featured in both the 1935 and 1951 versions. 9th to 15th December 1935 – Messrs Carrickford’s Repertory Players performed 7 different plays in the Hall on 7 consecutive nights (source the Hall Journal): 42  Under Two Flags, by Ouida (aka Marie Louise de la Ramée)  Fettered Lives, by Mrs Carrickford  Fisherman’s Dream, by Mrs Carrickford  Blacksmith’s Curse, by Mrs Carrickford  Nothing in his life, by LJ Walshe  The Bondman, by Sir Hall Caine  Garvey of the CID, by Mrs Carrickford Connacht Tribune 21st December 1935 reports as follows on page 6, under the heading ATHENRY CUP WINNER: “Messrs. Carrickford and Co. Players, who spent the past week in Athenry and gave some stage displays, held a singing competition on Sunday night. There were a large number of local entries. The first prize, a silver cup, was won by Mr. Thomas Kelly, Athenry.” 17th January 1936 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened Arizona to Broadway in the Hall, a 1933 movie starring James Dunn and Joan Bennett (source: Hall Journal). NB: This same storyline later formed the basis for a Laurel and Hardy comedy feature, where it was reworked as Jitterbugs (1943), for 20th Century Fox. 14th February 1936 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened A Lone Cowboy in the Hall, a 1933 Western starring Jackie Cooper, Lila Lee, and Addison Richards (source: Hall Journal). 23rd March 1936 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened Rocky Mountain Mystery, a 1935 Western starring Randolph Scott, Mrs. Leslie Carter, and Ann Sheridan (source: Hall Journal). 12th & 13th April 1936 – Athenry Dramatic Club performed The Cailín Bán (The Colleen Bawn, or The Brides of Garryowen) a Three Act play by Irish playwright Dion Boucicault (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 18th April 1936, page 13): “...a packed house on Sunday and Monday night when they presented the drama The Cailín Bán in the Town Hall, Athenry...” 24th April 1936 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened The Girl in Pawn (aka Little Miss Marker) a 1934 comedy starring Shirley Temple, Adolphe Menjou and Dorothy Dell (source: Hall Journal). NB: This was Shirley Temple's first starring role in a major motion picture. 15th May 1936 – Messrs Carron Brothers Travelling Picture Company screened The Gay Divorcee (aka The Gay Divorce) a 1934 musical starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers (source: Hall Journal). 42 Connacht Tribune 21st December 1935, page 6, confirms that Messrs Carrickford & Co Players were in the Hall that week
