It would be screened in the Hall again on 7th December 1947, see below. 25th November 1947 – Meet Dr Christian, a 1939 RKO Radio Pictures Film was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 22nd November 1947, page 9). It stars Jean Hersholt (as Dr Christian), Dorothy Lovett, Robert Baldwin and Enid Bennett. NB: This was to be the first of what became a series of 6 Dr Christian movies. As part of a Double Feature Night, a 1938 Grand National Films Inc Canadian Mounties movie, titled On the Great White Trail (aka Renfrew On the Great White Trail), was also shown on this night. James Newill stars (as Sgt Renfrew), along with Robert Frazer, Eddie Gribbon and Philo McCullough. 28th November 1947 – Trade Winds, a 1938 United Artists Comedy Murder Mystery was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 22nd November 1947, page 9). Fredric March, Joan Bennett, Thomas Mitchell, Ann Sothern and Ralph Bellamy star in this film. Talking Pictures TV synopsis: “A socialite is forced to go on the run after killing the man responsible for her sister’s death.” 2nd December 1947 – Second Chorus, a 1940 Paramount Pictures Musical was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 29th November 1947, page 11). It stars Paulette Goddard, Fred Astaire, Artie Shaw, Burgess Meredith and Charles Butterworth. NB: It would be screened again on 29th July 1949, see below. 5th December 1947 – Foreign Correspondent (aka Imposter and Personal History), a 1940 United Artists Spy Thriller was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 29th November 1947, page 11). Joel McCrea, Laraine Day, Herbert Marshall, George Sanders, Albert Basserman, Robert Benchley and Edmund Gwenn star in this film. NB: Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. 7th December 1947 – Hills of Old Wyoming, a 1937 Paramount Pictures Western was again screened in the Hall by O Smith Travelling Cinema Show at 4.30pm and 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th December 1947, page 9). This Western stars William Boyd (as Hopalong Cassidy), George Gabby Hayes, Russell Hayden, Morris Ankrum, Gail Sheridan, John Beach and Clara Kimball Young. NB: This film had been screened only 2 weeks earlier on 23rd November 1947, so must have been extremely popular with the Athenry audience? 8th December 1947 – Zenobia (aka Elephant’s Never Forget), a 1939 United Artists Comedy starring Oliver Hardy, Harry Langdon, Billie Burke, Alice Brady, Jean Parker and (Oscar winner) Hattie McDaniel was screened in the Hall by O Smith at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th December 1947, page 9). 9th December 1947 – Trail Dust, a 1936 Paramount Pictures Western was screened in the Hall by O Smith at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th December 1947, page 9). William Boyd stars (as Hopalong Cassidy), along with George Gabby Hayes, Russell Hayden, James Ellison, Morris Ankrum, Gwynne Shipman, Britt Wood and Dick Dickson. Busy Bodies, a 1933 Hal Roach Studios Comedy short starring Laurel & Hardy, along with Charlie Hall and Tiny Sandford was also shown on this date. NB: Screenplay by Stan Laurel. 12th December 1947 – Way Out West, a 1937 Hal Roach Studios Comedy starring Laurel & Hardy, along with Sharon Lynn, James Finlayson and the Avalon Boys was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 6th December 1947, page 9). NB: Would be screened again on 28th December 1957. 14th December 1947 – Topper Returns, a 1941 United Artists Comedy was screened at 4.30pm and 8.30pm by O Smith (source: Hall Journal, see Connacht Tribune 13th December 1947, page 11). Directed by Roy Del Ruth, it stars Joan Blondell, Roland Young Burke & Patsy Kelly. Talking Pictures TV: “A young woman returns as a ghost after being murdered and seeks help from Topper to find the killer.” NB: Part of the Topper series. Cosmo Topper can see and speak to ghosts.
