Murphy’s Town Hall Cinema Athenry 50 24th October 1947 – The Valley of Decision, a 1945 MGM Drama starring Gregory Peck, Greer Garson, Lionel Barrymore, Marsha Hunt, Donald Crisp and Jessica Tandy was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema (source: Hall Journal). NB: At the age of 80, Jessica Tandy would later go on to become the oldest winner of the Best Actress Oscar, for Driving Miss Daisy (1989). 28th October 1947 – A Chump At Oxford, a 1940 Hal Roach Studios Comedy Feature starring Laurel & Hardy was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema at 9.00pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 25th October 1947, page 9).). NB: Peter Cushing features, in an early screen role, as Student Jones. This film would be screened again on 25th December 1960, see below. A 1946 Thomas Davis Documentary titled A Nation Once Again, directed by Brendan Stafford, was also shown on this night. 31st October 1947 – Perfect Strangers, (aka Vacation from Marriage) a 1945 MGM Drama was screened in the Hall by O Smith at 9.00pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 25th October 1947, page 9). The cast of this film includes Robert Donat, Deborah Kerr, Glynis Johns, Ann Todd and Roland Culver. 4th November 1947 – Waterloo Bridge, a 1940 MGM Drama, adapted from Robert E Sherwood’s 1930 play of the same name, was screened in the Hall by O Smith Travelling Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 1st November 1947, page 9). It stars Robert Taylor, Vivien Leigh, Lucile Watson, Virginia Field, C Aubrey Smith and Maria Ouspenskaya. NB: This film would be screened again on 22nd February 1950, see below. 7th November 1947 – The House Across the Bay, a 1940 United Artists Drama starring was screened in the Hall by O Smith at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 1st November 1947, page 9). This film stars George Raft, Joan Bennett, Walter Pidgeon and Lloyd Nolan. The support feature was A Pan Am travelogue in Colour, titled Wings to Ireland. This short film takes the viewer on a journey from New York City to Ireland, aboard the DC-6B Clipper Mermaid. 11th November 1947 – Of Mice and Men, a 1939 United Artists Drama adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1937 novella of the same name, was screened in the Hall by O Smith at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 8th November 1947, page 9). This film stars Burgess Meredith, Betty Field, Lon Chaney Jr, Bob Steele and Noah Beery Jr. 14th November 1947 – The Power and the Glory, a 1941 MGM WW2 Era Film starring Kathrin Rosselle, Eric Bush, Lou Vernon, Eric Reiman and Peter Finch was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 8th November 1947, page 9). 18th November 1947 – The Bohemian Girl, a 1936 Hal Roach Studios Comedy Feature starring Laurel & Hardy, along with James Finlayson and Thelma Todd was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 15th November 1947, page 11). NB: The screenplay was based on Michael William Balfe’s opera of the same name. It would be screened again on 18th June 1961. 21st November 1947 – The White Cliffs of Dover, a 1944 MGM Film Adaptation of Alice Duer Miller’s 1940 verse novel, The White Cliffs, was screened in the Hall by O Smith Travelling Cinema Show at 8.30pm (source: Hall Journal, see also Connacht Tribune 15th November 1947, page 11). It stars Irene Dunne, Alan Marshall, Roddy McDowall, Frank Morgan, Van Johnson, C Aubrey Smith and Dame May Whitty.
