Murphy’s Town Hall Cinema Athenry 49 3rd July 1947 – Letter of Introduction, a 1938 Universal Pictures Comedy Drama starring Adolphe Menjou, Andrea Leeds, George Murphy, Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy, Rita Johnson, Ann Sheridan and Ernest Cossart was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). NB: Previously screened on 27th August 1940 by Leo Caslin. 6th July 1947 – Heart of the West, a 1936 Paramount Pictures Western was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). It stars William Boyd (as Hopalong Cassidy), James Ellison, George Gabby Hayes and Sidney Blackmer. 10th July 1947 – The Shanghai Gesture, a 1941 United Artists Film Noir was screened in the Hall by M McGovern (source: Hall Journal). It stars Gene Tierney, Walter Huston, Victor Mature, Ona Munson and Maria Ouspenskaya NB: It would be shown again in March 1949, see below. 13th July 1947 – Topper takes a Trip, a 1938 United Artists Comedy starring Constance Bennett, Roland Young (as Cosmo Topper), Billie Burke and Alan Mowbray was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). NB: Topper can see and speak to ghosts. It would be screened again on 7th November 1948 by E Smith. 17th July 1947 – Saps at Sea, a 1940 United Artists Comedy starring Laurel & Hardy along with Richard Cramer, James Finlayson, Ben Turpin and Mary Gordon was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). This was to be Laurel & Hardy’s last outing with Hal Roach Studios. NB: Would be screened again on 23rd March 1952. 20th July 1947 – Captain Caution, a 1940 United Artists Adventure Film starring Victor Mature, Alan Ladd, Louise Platt, Bruce Cabot and Vivienne Osborne was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). NB: The screenplay was based on Kenneth Roberts’ 1934 novel of the same name. 24th July 1947 – East Side of Heaven, a 1939 Universal Pictures Musical starring Bing Crosby, Joan Blondell, Mischa Auer and Irene Hervey was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). NB: Would be screened again on 11th January 1948 by O Smith. 29th July 1947 – Broadway Limited, a 1941 United Artists Drama was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). This film stars Victor McLaglen, Marjorie Woodworth, ZaSu Pitts, Patsy Kelly, Dennis O’Keeffe and Leonid Kinskey. 31st July 1947 – Slightly Honorable, a 1939 United Artists Mystery movie starring Pat O'Brien, Edward Arnold and Broderick Crawford was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). NB: Previously screened on 31st January 1946 by Daniel Ryan. 1st to 14th August 1947 – No film screenings in the Hall (source: Hall Journal). NB: Other Activities at this time. 15th August 1947 – Wings Over Africa, a 1936 RKO Radio Pictures Adventure Film starring Joan Gardner, Ian Colin, James Harcourt, James Carew and Alan Napier was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). 21st August 1947 – The Lost Chord, a 1933 Julius Hagen Productions Drama was screened by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). Directed by Maurice Elvey, it stars Elizabeth Allan, John Stuart, Mary Glynne, Anne Grey and Jack Hawkins. NB: Previously screened in the Hall on 15th March 1935 by Carron Brothers, see above. 24th August 1947 – Gone to the Dogs, a 1939 Renown Pictures Corporation Musical Comedy starring George Wallace, Lois Green, John Dobbie, Ronald Whelan and Alec Kellaway was screened in the Hall by McGovern (source: Hall Journal). 25th August to 13th October 1947 – No film screenings in the Hall (source: Hall Journal). NB: Other Activities. 14th October 1947 – Andy Hardy’s Double Life, a 1942 MGM Comedy was screened in the Hall by O Smith Cinema Show (source: Hall Journal). It stars Mickey Rooney, Cecilia Parker, Lewis Stone, Esther Williams, Ann Rutherford and Fay Holden. 17th October 1947 – Treasure Island, a 1934 MGM Swashbuckling Pirate Adventure Film was screened in the Hall by O Smith (source: Hall Journal). This Victor Fleming directed adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel stars Wallace Beery, Jackie Cooper, Lionel Barrymore, Dorothy Peterson, Nigel Bruce and Otto Kruger.
