Ann Miller, Joe Besser, Larry Parks, Joe Sawyer, Jimmy Little, Barbara Brown and Doodles Weaver star. 20th August 1946 – Sweet and Low-Down, a 1944 Twentieth Century Fox film was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). This film stars Benny Goodman & His Orchestra, along with Linda Darnell & Jack Oakie, and was a fictionalized glimpse into the life of Benny Goodman. 22nd & 23rd August 1946 – The Great Dictator, a 1940 United Artists Film was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). It stars Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Jack Oakie and Billy Gilbert. NB: This was Charlie Chaplin’s first true sound film. It was written, directed, produced, scored by and starred himself, in 2 leading roles no less, including the role of the Great Dictator, Adenoid Hynkel. 25th August 1946 – In Old Chicago, a 1938 Twentieth Century Fox Musical starring Alice Faye, Tyrone Power, Don Ameche, Alice Brady and Andy Devine was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: The story takes place against a backdrop of the 1871 Great Chicago Fire. This film would be screened again on 5th July 1950. 27th August 1946 – Sunday Dinner for a Soldier, a 1944 Twentieth Century Fox Wartime Romance starring Anne Baxter, John Hodiak, Charles Winninger and Connie Marshall was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: The screenplay was based on a novelette by Martha Cheavens. 29th August 1946 – Spotlight Scandals (aka Spotlight Revue), a 1943 Monogram Pictures Musical Comedy starring Frank Fay, Billy Gilbert and Bonnie Baker was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 1st September 1946 – Counterfeit, a 1936 Columbia Pictures Crime Drama starring Chester Morris, Marian Marsh, Margot Grahame and Lloyd Nolan was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 3rd September 1946 – Don’t Cod Me a 1940 Ealing Studios Comedy starring George Formby, Phyllis Calvert, Garry Marsh and Romney Brent was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Edward G Robinson, Ruth Warrick and Bob Haymes star in this film. NB: The screenplay was based on Theodore Pratt’s 1943 novel, Mr Winkle Goes to War. Talking Pictures TV synopsis: “Mr Winkle, a mild-mannered, middle-aged bank clerk finds himself in battle in the South Pacific.” 10th September 1946 – Russian Guerrillas (aka Days of Glory), a 1944 RKO Radio Pictures WW2 Film starring Tamara Toumanova and Gregory Peck was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal).
