Basil Rathbone is probably best known for his Sherlock Holmes. 19th March 1946 – Clive of India, a 1935 United Artists Biopic was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). Ronald Colman stars (as Robert Clive), along with Loretta Young (Margaret Maskelyne) and Colin Clive (Captain Johnstone) NB: Colin Clive, a real-life relative of Clive of India, is probably best remembered for playing Henry Frankenstein, in James Whale’s 1931 Horror, Frankenstein. 21st March 1946 – Frontier Law, a 1943 Universal Pictures Western starring Russell Hayden, Fuzzy Knight, Dennis Moore, Jennifer Holt and Frank LaRue was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). 24th March 1946 – Captive Wild Woman, a 1943 Universal Pictures Horror Film was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). It stars Evelyn Ankers, John Carradine, Milburn Stone and Acquanetta (as Paula, the Gorilla Girl). The Ritz Brothers (Al, Jimmy & Harry) star, along with Frances Langford, Mary Beth Hughes, Franklin Pangborn, Stuart Crawford, George Zucco, Elisabeth Risdon and Jack La Rue. 31st March 1946 – Moonlight and Cactus, a 1944 Universal Pictures Musical Western was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). It stars The Andrews Sisters (Patty, Maxine & Laverne), along with Leo Carrillo and Shemp Howard (real name Samuel Horwitz, probably best known as one of The Three Stooges). 2nd April 1946 – Lovely to Look At (aka Thin Ice), a 1937 Twentieth Century Fox Comedy Musical Romance starring Sonja Henie, Tyrone Power, Arthur Treacher, Alan Hale Sr and Joan Davis was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). This film stars Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy, Bonita Granville, WC Fields, Sammy Kaye & His Orchestra, Jane Powell, Peggy O'Neill, Jackie Moran and Regis Toomey. 6th & 7th April 1946 – Home in Indiana, a 1944 Twentieth Century Fox Equine movie starring Walter Brennan, Lon McCallister, Jeanne Crain, June Haver and Charlotte Greenwood was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). NB: The screenplay was adapted from George Agnew Chamberlain’s 1941 novel, The Phantom Filly, and was remade by Twentieth Century Fox in 1957 as a Musical; titled April Love, which would be screened in the Hall on 26th February 1965, see below. 8th & 9th April 1946 – Jane Eyre, a 1943 Twentieth Century Fox film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 novel of the same name, was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). This film stars Orson Welles (as Rochester), Joan Fontaine (as Jane Eyre), Peggy Ann Garner (as the young Jane Eyre), Margaret O’Brien, Agnes Moorehead and Elizabeth Taylor. NB: This film was directed by Robert Stevenson and it would be screened in the Hall again on 16th October 1949. 11th April 1946 – Don't Hook Now, a 1943 Paramount Pictures Golfing Comedy Short starring Bing Crosby along 44 Tyrone Edmund Power III (1914 – 1958) was steeped in Drama, descending as he did from an Irish theatrical dynasty, stretching back to his greatgrandfather, the Irish actor and comedian Tyrone Power (1797–1841). Through his paternal great-grandmother, Anne Gilbert, Power was related to Sir Laurence Olivier; through his paternal grandmother, stage actress Ethel Lavenu, he was related to Evelyn Waugh.
