Murphy’s Town Hall Cinema Athenry 35 26th & 27th December 1945 – New Moon, a 1940 MGM Musical starring Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy, Mary Boland and George Zucco was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 28th December 1945 – Desert Victory, a 1943 Twentieth Century Fox WW2 Documentary film covering the North Africa Campaign was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 30th December 1945 – Rookies (aka Buck Privates), a 1941 Universal Pictures Musical Comedy starring Bud Abbott & Lou Costello along with Jane Frazee, Shemp Howard and The Andrews Sisters was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: Shemp was one of The Three Stooges. 1st January 1946 – A 1943 Columbia Pictures Musical, titled Is Everybody Happy?, was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). This film stars Ted Lewis, Nan Wynn and Lynn Merrick. 2nd January 1946 – The Strangest Case (aka The Crime Doctor's Strangest Case), a 1943 Columbia Pictures Murder Mystery movie starring Warner Baxter, Lynn Merrick, Gloria Dickson, Barton MacLane and Lloyd Bridges was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: This is the 2nd movie in Columbia Pictures’ series of 9 Crime Doctor Films. 3rd January 1946 – They Met in the Dark, a 1943 General Film Distributors Comedy Thriller was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). This film stars James Mason, Joyce Howard and Brefni O’Rorke. 6th, 7th & 8th January 1946 – The Song of Bernadette, a 1943 Twentieth Century Fox Biopic was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). It stars Jennifer Jones (as Bernadette), Vincent Price, Lee J Cobb and Alan Napier. NB: The film tells the story of Bernadette Soubirous, sometimes called Bernadette of Lourdes, who reputedly witnessed 18 Marian Apparitions in 1858 and was later canonized in 1933. Alan Napier is perhaps best remembered for portraying Alfred Pennyworth, Butler to Bruce Wayne in the 1960s Batman TV series starring Adam West (as Batman). 13th January 1946 – Northwest Rangers (aka Gambler’s Choice), a 1942 MGM Canadian Mounties movie starring James Craig, William Lundigan, Patricia Dane, John Carradine and Keenan Wynn was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: Would be screened again on 20th February 1948 by O Smith. 15th January 1946 – Close Harmony, a 1929 Paramount Pictures Musical Comedy was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). This film stars Charles Buddy Rogers, Nancy Carroll, Jack Oakie, Richard Skeets Gallagher and Ricca Allen. 17th & 18th January 1946 – Johnny Apollo, a 1940 Twentieth Century Fox Film Noir was screened by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). Tyrone Power, Dorothy Lamour, Lionel Atwell, Edward Arnold and Lloyd Nolan star in this film, which would be screened again on 22nd June 1949. NB: Dorothy Lamour’s real name was Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton. “I’m Johnny Apollo, College Man... Banker’s Son... Now a Mobster!” 20th January 1946 – Beautiful but Broke, a 1944 Columbia Pictures Musical Comedy starring Joan Davis and Jane Frazee was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 22nd January 1946 – Holt of the Secret Service, a 15 episode 1941 Columbia Pictures serial was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). It stars Jack Holt, Evelyn Brent and C Montague Shaw. NB: It’s unclear which episode, (or indeed episodes), might have been screened on this occasion but Chapters in this serial include Chaotic Creek and Ramparts of Revenge. 24th January 1946 – The Mummy's Tomb, a 1942 Universal Pictures Horror Film starring Lon Chaney Jr, Dick Foran, John Hubbard, Elyse Knox, George Zucco, Wallace Ford, Turhan Bey, Cecil Kellaway and Virginia Brissac was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal).
