Murphy’s Town Hall Cinema Athenry 32 23rd September 1945 – Escape to Happiness (aka Intermezzo and also, Intermezzo: A Love Story), a 1939 United Artists Romantic film was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). It stars Leslie Howard, Ingrid Bergman, Ann Todd, Edna Best and Cecil Kellaway. 24th September 1945 – Crime Doctor, a 1943 Columbia Pictures Crime film starring Warner Baxter (as Dr Robert Ordway), Margaret Lindsay, John Litel, Constance Worth and Ray Collins was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: This was the first episode in what would become a series of 10 Crime Doctor films, starring Baxter in the title role, made by Columbia Pictures in the period between 1943 and 1949. The films were adapted from a popular radio series, which had been sponsored by Philip Morris ™ cigarettes. 26th September 1945 – The Lamp Still Burns, a 1943 General Film Distributors Drama was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Rosamund John, Stewart Granger, Godfrey Tearle, Joyce Grenfell, John Laurie and Brefni O’Rorke star. NB: Would be screened in the Hall again on 29th April 1947 by McGovern. 28th September 1945 – Secret Command, a 1944 Columbia Pictures WW2 Film was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Pat O'Brien, Carole Landis, Barton MacLane and Carol Nugent star in this film. 1st October 1945 – Jack London (aka The Story of Jack London), a 1943 United Artists Biopic was screened by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Michael O’Shea, Susan Hayward, Virginia Mayo, Osa Massen, Harry Davenport, Frank Craven and Regis Toomey star. NB: It would be screened again on 7th September 1949. The screenplay was adapted from Charmian London’s 1921 biography, The Book of Jack London. Charmian was Jack London's 2nd wife. 3rd October 1945 – Heaven Can Wait, a 1943 Twentieth Century Fox Comedy starring Gene Tierney, Don Ameche and Charles Coburn was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Marjorie Main, Laird Cregar, Spring Byington, Allyn Joslyn, Eugene Pallette, Signe Hasso, Louis Calhern and Clara Blandick provide support. 5th October 1945 – The Youngest Profession, a 1943 MGM Comedy was screened by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Virginia Weidler, Edward Arnold, John Carroll, Scotty Beckett and Agnes Moorehead star. NB: This film includes cameos from Lana Turner, Greer Garson, William Powell, Walter Pidgeon and Robert Taylor. 42 8th October 1945 – Sarong Girl, a 1943 Monogram Pictures Comedy starring Ann Corio, Tim Ryan, Irene Ryan and Mantan Moreland was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: Irene Ryan is probably best remembered for playing Granny in TV Sitcom, The Beverly Hillbillies (1962–1971). 10th October 1945 –– His Butler's Sister, a 1943 Universal Pictures Comedy was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Deanna Durbin, Franchot Tone, Pat O'Brien, Akim Tamiroff, Evelyn Ankers and Hans Conried star. NB: This film would be screened again on 5th March 1950, see below. 12th October 1945 – Something to Shout About, a 1943 Columbia Pictures Musical was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). This film stars Don Ameche, Janet Blair, Cyd Charisse and Jack Oakie. NB: It features Cole Porter classic, You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To. Tula Ellice Finklea was the real name of Cyd Charisse. 15th October 1945 – Come Closer Folks, a 1936 Columbia Pictures Comedy was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). It stars James Dunn, Marian Marsh, Wynne Gibson and Gene Lockhart. 17th October 1945 – My Friend Flicka, a 1943 Twentieth Century Fox Western was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Roddy McDowall, Preston Foster and Rita Johnson star. NB: The screenplay was based on Mary O'Hara’s 1941 novel of the same name, the first in a trilogy. Flicka is a horse. 19th October 1945 – Crazy to Kill (aka Dr. Gillespie's Criminal Case), a 1943 MGM Mystery movie was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). Lionel Barrymore star as Dr Gillespie, along with Van Johnson, Keye Luke, Alma Kruger and Donna Reed. NB: This was the 3rd of MGM's 6 movie Dr Gillespie series. The screenplay was based on characters created by Max Brand. 42 Agnes Moorehead is probably best known for her role as Samantha Stephen’s mother, Endora, on the TV Sitcom Bewitched, but she also had many notable roles in Film, including Citizen Kane.
