We sincerely appreciate your good wishes and will reply to all in due course.” 5th September 1942 – The Lady from Nowhere, a 1936 Columbia Pictures Gangster Film was screened in the Hall by Shandon Talkies (source: Hall Journal). Mary Astor, Charles Quigley and Thurston Hall star in this film. 6th September 1942 to 26th August 1945 – NB: The Hall Journal contains no record of films being screened in the Hall between these dates but other activities continue as normal. The reason for this break is unknown. Dick Murphy, founder of the Town Hall had sadly passed away during this period, on 4th February 1945. It was screened by Daniel Ryan, Gort (source: Hall Journal). Marlene Dietrich, Charles Boyer, Basil Rathbone, C Aubrey Smith, Joseph Schildkraut, John Carradine, Alan Marshal and Lucile Watson star. NB: The screenplay was adapted from Robert S Hichens’ 1904 novel of the same name. 29th August 1945 – Abbott & Costello Hit the Ice, a 1943 Universal Pictures Comedy was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan, Gort (source: Hall Journal). Bud Abbott & Lou Costello star along with Ginny Simms, Patric Knowles, Elyse Knox, Joseph Sawyer, Marc Lawrence, Sheldon Leonard and Johnny Long & His Orchestra. 31st August 1945 – Three Hearts for Julia, a 1943 MGM Comedy starring Ann Sothern and Melvyn Douglas was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 2nd September 1945 – The Eternal City, a 1923 First National Pictures Silent Film starring Barbara La Marr, Lionel Barrymore, Bert Lytell and Montagu Love appears to have been screened by J Carron (source: Hall Journal). NB: The screenplay was based on Hall Caine’s 1901 novel of the same name. 3rd September 1945 – Prison Mutiny (aka You Can't Beat the Law), a 1943 Monogram Pictures Drama starring Edward Norris, Joan Woodbury and Jack LaRue was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 5th September 1945 – Coney Island, a 1943 Twentieth Century Fox Musical was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). It stars Betty Grable, George Montgomery, Cesar Romero and Phil Silvers. NB: Phil Silvers is probably best known for playing Master Sgt Ernest Bilko, in his own 1950s TV sitcom, The Phil Silvers Show. 7th September 1945 – The Golden Hour (aka Pot O’Gold), a 1941 United Artists Romantic Musical Comedy was screened by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). It stars Paulette Goddard, James Stewart, Charles Winninger and Mary Gordon. NB: It would be screened again on 1st October 1948. 8th September 1945 – The Great Waltz, a 1938 MGM Biopic was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). This film stars Luise Rainer, Fernand Gravet and Miliza Korjus with a screenplay loosely based on the life of Johann Strauss II. NB: It would be screened again on 2nd January 1948 by O Smith, see below. 17th September 1945 – When Blackie Goes to Hollywood (aka Boston Blackie Goes Hollywood) a 1942 Columbia Pictures Crime Film was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: the Hall Journal). This film stars Chester Morris, Constance Worth, William Wright & Forrest Tucker. NB: Chester Morris plays Boston Blackie. Directed by Michael Gordon, it was to be the 4th of the 14 Boston Blackie films, based on the Jack Boyle stories. 19th September 1945 – Sweet Rosie O'Grady, a 1943 Twentieth Century Fox Musical starring Betty Grable, Robert Young, Adolphe Menjou and Virginia Grey was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). 21st September 1945 – Tunisian Victory, a 1944 WW2 MGM propaganda film was screened in the Hall by Daniel Ryan (source: Hall Journal). NB: This was an Anglo-American co-production about victories in the North Africa Campaign. It would be screened again on 8th April 1947.
