Murphy’s Town Hall Cinema Athenry 23 29th December 1939 – Rainbow on the River (aka It Happened in New Orleans), a 1936 RKO Radio Pictures Musical starring Bobby Breen, May Robson and Charles Butterworth was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). 5th January 1940 – The Adventures of Robin Hood, a 1938 Warner Brothers Swashbuckler was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Una O’Connor, Patric Knowles, Eugene Pallette and Alan Hale star in this film. NB: It won 3 Academy Awards in total: Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing & Best Original Score and would be screened in the Hall several more times, including June 1957, April 1965 and April 1973. 12th January 1940 – Mystery in Hollywood (aka Hollywood Stadium Mystery) a 1938 Republic Pictures Mystery movie was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). Neil Hamilton, Evelyn Venable and Barbara Pepper star. 19th January 1940 – The Three Mesquiteers in The Purple Riders (aka The Purple Vigilantes), a 1938 Republic Pictures Western starring Robert Livingston, Ray Corrigan and Max Terhune was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). The Purple Riders is the 12th Republic Pictures Film, in the 51 movie Three Mesquiteers series of B-movies. The screenplays were based on William Colt MacDonald’s Western novel series. John Wayne actually played the character Stony Brooke in 8 of the films but unfortunately he is not in this one. 25th January 1940 – Merry-Go-Round of 1938, a 1937 Universal Pictures Comedy starring Bert Lahr, Billy House, Jimmy Savo, Louise Fazenda, Mischa Auer, Alice Brady, Joy Hodges, John Dusty King and Barbara Read was screened by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). 36 16th February 1940 – Stage Door, a 1937 RKO Radio Pictures Drama was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). It stars Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Adolphe Menjou, Gail Patrick, Constance Collier, Andrea Leeds, Samuel S Hinds and Lucille Ball. 23rd February 1940 – Fit for a King, a 1937 RKO Radio Pictures Comedy starring Joe E Brown, Helen Mack, Paul Kelly and Harry Davenport was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). 8th March 1940 – Lady Behave!, a 1938 Republic Pictures Comedy starring Sally Eilers, Neil Hamilton, Joseph Schildkraut and Grant Mitchell was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). 37 15th March 1940 – My Bill, a 1938 Warner Bros Drama starring Kay Francis, Bonita Granville, John Litel, Anita Louise, Bobby Jordan, Dickie Moore, Maurice Murphy and Elisabeth Risdon was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). 29th March 1940 – West of Shanghai, a 1937 Warner Bros Adventure film starring Boris Karloff, Beverly Roberts, Ricardo Cortez, Gordon Oliver and Sheila Bromley was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). 4th April 1940 – Angels with Dirty Faces, a 1938 Warner Bros Gangster Film starring James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal): Soapy: “Hey! Call a fair game or I'll slap you right in the kisser!” Rocky Sullivan (Cagney): “You'll slap me?? You slap me in a dream; you better wake up and apologize!” 16th April 1940 – Convict 99, a 1938 Gainsborough Pictures Comedy starring Will Hay, Moore Marriott, Graham Moffatt and Googie Withers was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). 25th April 1940 – Bringing Up Baby, a 1938 RKO Radio Pictures Comedy was screened in the Hall by Leo Caslin (source: Hall Journal). Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Barry Fitzgerald star. NB: This popular Howard Hawks Comedy would be screened in the Hall again, more than 21 years later, in December 1961. Baby is a leopard. 36 NB: The Hall Journal calls this Merry Go Round of 1939 but we were unable to trace any movie with that exact title. 37 NB: The Journal records a film titled Girl Behave. Unfortunately we were unable to identify any movie with that title but Lady Behave seemed most likely.
